Best Santa Clarita Neighborhoods for Families: Advice From a Mom Who Raised 3 Kids Here
When people ask me, “What’s the best neighborhood in Santa Clarita for families?” my honest answer is always… it depends on your season of life.
After raising three kids here over the last 25 years, I can tell you firsthand that the “perfect” neighborhood changes depending on your kids’ ages, and your lifestyle.
Our family moved quite a bit while raising our kids, but not because we didn’t love Santa Clarita. Quite the opposite. We loved it so much we just kept finding different versions of how we wanted to live here.
We bought homes, renovated them, enjoyed them for a while, and then moved to fit the next stage of life. And every move taught me something.
Valencia: Beautiful Views Aren’t Everything
One of our first homes was in Valencia, in a hilly area with incredible views.
At the time, we thought, “This is it!”
The sunsets were beautiful. The neighborhood felt peaceful. The view made us feel like we had truly arrived.
And then real life happened. We had three busy kids. Turns out, steep hills and kids riding bikes everywhere are not exactly the dream combo.
We quickly realized the house itself matters, but how our family lives every day matters even more. I see buyers make this mistake all the time. They fall in love with the “wow” factor of a home without thinking through what everyday life will actually feel like.
Behind Granary Square: The Years We Could Walk Everywhere
We moved back to the neighborhood our first home was in, the Valencia neighborhood behind Granary Square. And that location changed everything for our family.
Flat streets. Miles of paseos. The ability for the kids to ride bikes or walk safely to school and friends’ houses.
If you’ve ever tried getting three kids to different schools and activities, you know exactly why this mattered.
Suddenly, life got easier. Less driving. More independence for the kids. More neighborhood friendships. More spontaneous “Mom, can I ride over to so-and-so’s house?”
That season taught me something huge about choosing neighborhoods: Walkability is underrated.
Especially when you have younger kids or busy teens, the right neighborhood can actually make family life easier.
Placerita Canyon: A Different Kind of Magic
As our kids got older, our priorities shifted again. We moved to Placerita Canyon, where we’ve lived for almost 10 years now. And if you know Placerita, you know it is a completely different vibe.
No sidewalks. No street lights. A little wild. A little peaceful. And exactly what we wanted in this season of life.
We wanted space. Room for animals. Quiet mornings and a little breathing room. And we absolutely love it. Would I have chosen it when the kids were younger? Probably not. But at the age they were when we moved, it was perfect.
That’s the thing about Santa Clarita. There isn’t one “best” neighborhood. There’s the best neighborhood for your family right now.
So, What Are the Best Santa Clarita Neighborhoods for Families?
Here’s my quick take after living here, raising kids here, and helping families move here for years:
Valencia
Great for walkability, paseos, parks, and convenience. Especially wonderful for families wanting kids to have some independence as they grow.
Northbridge / North Park
Family-friendly feel, great amenities, strong sense of community, and easy access to parks and schools.
Stevenson Ranch
Ideal for commuters and families wanting beautiful neighborhoods with a strong school draw and freeway access.
Placerita Canyon / Sand Canyon
Perfect if you want more land, privacy, animals, or breathing room. A different lifestyle, but such a special one.
Happy Valley
Charm, character, mature trees, and homes that feel unique instead of cookie cutter.
My Best Advice?
Don’t just buy the house. Buy the lifestyle.
Think about: Can your kids ride bikes? Will you be in the car constantly? Can teenagers have some independence? How close are schools, sports, grocery stores, and friends? What will everyday Tuesday life actually feel like here?
Because the prettiest house is not always the best fit.
(Trust me. Signed, the mom who bought the view house on the hill. )
